Television has had a big influence on the culture of many societies, including my country, Vietnam. In my opinion, television has had both positive and negative effects on the cultural development of my society, but I believe the positive effects are greater.
On the one hand, television has had many positive effects. Firstly, it helps to protect and promote traditional Vietnamese culture. There are many TV programmes about traditional music, festivals, food and history, which help young people to learn about their culture. For example, during the Lunar New Year, TV channels show special programmes about traditional customs, which are watched by millions of families. Secondly, television helps people to learn about other cultures. Through foreign films, documentaries and travel programmes, Vietnamese people can learn about the lives and customs of people in other countries, which makes them more open-minded. Thirdly, television has helped to spread the national language and connect people in different regions of the country.
On the other hand, television also has some negative effects. Firstly, there are many foreign programmes, especially from the USA, Korea and China, which are very popular with young people. Some young people prefer foreign music, fashion and lifestyles to Vietnamese ones, so traditional culture may become less popular. Secondly, some TV programmes show violence or unhealthy lifestyles, which can have a bad influence on young people. Thirdly, people spend a lot of time watching TV, so they have less time for traditional activities, such as visiting relatives and neighbours or taking part in community events.
In my opinion, the positive effects of television are greater than the negative effects, but the government should encourage more high-quality Vietnamese programmes.
In conclusion, television has affected the culture of my society both positively and negatively, but overall, I believe its influence has been positive.
