Science has changed farming a lot in the last hundred years. Some people believe that scientific developments in farming always bring big benefits. I partly agree with this opinion, because although science has helped farmers in many ways, it has also caused some problems.
Firstly, there is no doubt that science has brought many benefits to agriculture. New machines like tractors and harvesters help farmers to work faster and produce more food with fewer workers. In addition, scientists have created new types of seeds and fertilisers that help crops grow better. As a result, farmers can produce much more food than before, and this helps to feed the growing population of the world. For example, the Green Revolution helped countries like India to reduce hunger.
However, I do not agree that these developments are always good. Firstly, many chemical fertilisers and pesticides are harmful to the environment. They can pollute rivers and soil, and kill insects such as bees, which are important for nature. Secondly, some people are worried about genetically modified food, because we do not know the long-term effects on human health. Moreover, modern farming methods often need a lot of money, so small farmers in poor countries cannot afford them and they may lose their jobs.
In my opinion, science is very useful for farming, but it must be used carefully. Governments should control the use of chemicals and support small farmers.
In conclusion, I partly agree that scientific developments in farming bring major benefits, such as higher food production. However, they do not always bring benefits, because they can also damage the environment and people's health.
