Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, and it brings a lot of money to many countries. However, some people believe that the damage tourism causes to local cultures and the environment is often ignored. I mostly agree with this opinion.
Firstly, it is true that tourism is very important for the economy. Tourists spend money on hotels, restaurants, transport and souvenirs, and this creates many jobs for local people. For many countries, such as Thailand or Spain, tourism is one of the main sources of income. Because of this, governments and businesses usually focus on attracting more tourists and making more money.
However, I agree that the negative effects of tourism are often ignored. Firstly, tourism can damage the environment. When too many tourists visit a place, they create a lot of rubbish and pollution. For example, some beaches and mountains become dirty, and coral reefs are damaged by tourists. In addition, new hotels and resorts are often built in natural areas, which destroys forests and the homes of wild animals. Secondly, tourism can also harm local cultures. Some traditional festivals and customs are changed to entertain tourists, so they lose their real meaning. Local people may also start to copy the lifestyle of foreign tourists.
In my opinion, governments should pay more attention to these problems. They should make rules to protect the environment and local culture, for example by limiting the number of tourists in some places.
In conclusion, I agree that although tourism brings many economic benefits, the damage it causes to local cultures and the environment is often not taken seriously enough.
