Smoking can cause serious health problems, such as lung cancer and heart disease. Some people believe that because smokers choose to smoke and know the dangers, they should pay more for their medical treatment than non-smokers. I partly agree with this statement, but I do not think it is a fair solution in every case.
On the one hand, there are some reasons to support this idea. Firstly, everyone knows that smoking is dangerous, because there are warnings on cigarette packets and in the media. If people still choose to smoke, they should take responsibility for the results of their choice. Secondly, treating smoking-related diseases costs a lot of money, and this money comes from taxes paid by everyone, including non-smokers. Some people think it is unfair that non-smokers have to pay for the unhealthy choices of smokers. Thirdly, if smokers have to pay more for treatment, some of them may decide to stop smoking.
On the other hand, I think there are some problems with this idea. Firstly, nicotine is very addictive, so many smokers want to stop but find it very difficult. Many people started smoking when they were teenagers, before they understood the dangers. Secondly, smokers already pay a lot of tax on cigarettes, which helps to pay for healthcare. Thirdly, if we make smokers pay more, we may also have to make other people pay more, such as people who drink alcohol, eat unhealthy food or do dangerous sports. This would be very difficult and unfair. In addition, it is hard to prove that an illness was caused only by smoking.
In my opinion, instead of making smokers pay more for treatment, the government should increase taxes on cigarettes and help smokers to quit.
In conclusion, I partly agree that smokers should take responsibility for their health, but I do not think they should pay more for medical treatment.
