Many cities today have to decide whether to keep their old, historic buildings or to knock them down and build modern buildings instead. In my opinion, cities should try to preserve their historic buildings, although modern buildings are also necessary.
Firstly, historic buildings are an important part of a city's history and culture. They show how people lived in the past and help younger generations to understand their history. For example, in Hanoi, the Old Quarter and old temples such as the Temple of Literature show the long history of the city. If these buildings are destroyed, this history will be lost forever, because they cannot be rebuilt.
Secondly, historic buildings make a city unique and beautiful. Modern buildings made of glass and steel look very similar in every city in the world. However, old buildings have special designs and styles that make each city different. For example, Paris and Rome are famous for their beautiful old buildings.
Thirdly, old buildings can bring economic benefits. Many tourists visit cities to see historic buildings, and tourism creates jobs and brings money to the city. For example, the ancient town of Hoi An in Vietnam attracts millions of tourists every year because of its old houses and streets.
On the other hand, I understand that cities need modern buildings. Populations are growing, so cities need more houses, offices and shopping centres. Some old buildings are also unsafe and expensive to repair. However, I think cities can build modern buildings in new areas and keep the historic buildings in the old areas. They can also repair old buildings and use them for new purposes, such as museums, cafes or hotels.
In conclusion, I believe that cities should try to preserve their old, historic buildings, because they are important for history, culture and tourism.
