Recent statistics show that violent crime among young people under 18 is increasing. Some psychologists believe that the main reason is that children today do not get enough social and emotional education from their parents and teachers. I partly agree with this opinion.
On the one hand, I agree that a lack of social and emotional learning is an important reason. Nowadays, many parents are very busy with their work, so they do not have enough time to talk to their children, teach them good values or help them deal with their feelings. Some children grow up in difficult families, where parents argue or even use violence. As a result, these children may not learn how to control their anger or solve problems peacefully. In addition, schools usually focus on exams and academic subjects, and they do not teach students much about emotions, respect and how to get along with others.
On the other hand, I think there are also other reasons for youth violence. Firstly, poverty and unemployment can make young people angry and hopeless, and some of them join gangs. Secondly, violent films, video games and social media may influence young people's behaviour. Thirdly, drugs and alcohol can make young people more aggressive. Moreover, peer pressure from friends can push some teenagers to commit crimes.
In my opinion, parents and teachers play a very important role in preventing youth violence, but other social problems should also be solved. Schools should teach social and emotional skills, and the government should help poor families and young people.
In conclusion, I partly agree that a lack of social and emotional learning causes youth violence, but I believe there are also other important reasons, such as poverty, the media and peer pressure.
