Some people believe that people who become ill because of an unhealthy lifestyle or a bad diet should pay more for their health care. I disagree with this opinion for several reasons.
Firstly, it is very difficult to know the exact cause of an illness. For example, heart disease can be caused by eating unhealthy food, but it can also be caused by genes, stress or pollution. Many people who eat healthy food and do exercise still get sick. Therefore, it is not fair to make people pay more because doctors cannot be sure that their illness is their own fault.
Secondly, many people have an unhealthy lifestyle because of their situation, not because of their choice. Poor people often cannot afford healthy food such as fresh vegetables and fruit, so they buy cheap fast food. Some people work long hours, so they do not have time to exercise or cook healthy meals. If these people have to pay more for health care, their life will become even more difficult, and they may not go to the doctor when they are sick.
Thirdly, health care is a basic human right. Everyone should be treated equally in hospitals, whether they are rich or poor, healthy or unhealthy.
However, I understand that unhealthy lifestyles cost the government a lot of money. Instead of making sick people pay more, the government should put taxes on unhealthy products like cigarettes and sugary drinks, and use the money to educate people about healthy living.
In conclusion, I disagree that people who cause their own illnesses should pay more for health care, because it is unfair and difficult to prove.
