Some people believe that the increase of violence on television and in films directly causes more violence in society. However, other people think that violence in society is caused by deeper social problems, such as unemployment. In this essay, I will discuss both views and give my opinion.
On the one hand, violence in the media can influence people, especially children and teenagers. Young people often copy what they see on television or in films. If they see their favourite characters using violence to solve problems, they may think that violence is acceptable. In addition, watching a lot of violence can make people less sensitive, so they do not feel shocked when they see violence in real life. There have been some cases where young criminals copied crimes from films.
On the other hand, I think that social problems are a more important cause of violence. When people are unemployed and poor, they may feel angry and hopeless, and some of them may turn to crime to get money. Other problems, such as drugs, alcohol, poor education and family problems, can also make people violent. For example, many violent crimes happen in poor areas where there are few jobs and many young people have nothing to do. Moreover, many people watch violent films, but most of them never become violent in real life.
In my opinion, violence in the media has a small effect on society, especially on children, but social problems are the main cause of violence. Therefore, governments should focus on reducing unemployment and poverty, and parents should also control what their children watch.
In conclusion, although media violence can affect some people, I believe that social problems such as unemployment have a much bigger effect on the level of violence in society.
