Nowadays, photographs and films are used more and more to communicate information. Some people believe that images are becoming a more powerful way of communicating than the written word. I partly agree with this opinion.

On the one hand, it is true that images are very powerful today. Firstly, images are easy and quick to understand. People can understand a photo or a short video in a few seconds, while reading a long article takes much more time. In the modern world, people are very busy, so they prefer to watch videos on YouTube or TikTok instead of reading. Secondly, images can show strong emotions. For example, a photo of a child in a war can make people feel sad and want to help more than a written report. Thirdly, images can be understood by people who speak different languages, so they are useful for international communication.

On the other hand, I think the written word is still very important. Written texts can explain complex ideas and give detailed information, which is difficult to do with images. For example, laws, scientific research and contracts must be written in words. In addition, images can sometimes be misleading, because photos can be edited easily and videos can show only part of a story. Written texts can give more explanation and different opinions. Moreover, books and articles help people to think more deeply and develop their imagination.

In my opinion, images are more powerful for attracting attention and showing emotions, but the written word is better for explaining and giving detailed information.

In conclusion, I partly agree that images are becoming more powerful than the written word, but I believe that both are important ways of communicating in the modern world.

With the rise of smartphones, social media and video-sharing platforms, images such as photographs and films have become central to modern communication. While I agree that images are increasingly influential, I do not believe they have become more powerful than the written word in every respect.

There are clear reasons why images have gained such importance. They communicate instantly and can be understood regardless of language or literacy level, which makes them ideal in a fast-paced, globalised world. Platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and TikTok are built around visual content, and many people, particularly the young, now prefer watching videos to reading articles. Images also have a unique emotional impact. A single photograph, such as that of a drowned refugee child on a European beach in 2015, can move public opinion and prompt political action far more effectively than pages of statistics.

However, the written word remains essential for many purposes. Complex ideas, arguments and detailed information, such as those found in scientific research, legal documents and news analysis, can only be fully expressed in words. Writing allows for precision, nuance and the presentation of evidence in ways that images cannot match. Furthermore, images can easily be manipulated or taken out of context, and without written explanation they may be misinterpreted. In this sense, words often give images their meaning.
