Some people believe that when a society punishes murderers with the death penalty, it is also committing murder, so life in prison is a better punishment. I mostly agree with this statement, although I understand why some people support the death penalty.
On the one hand, some people think that the death penalty is a suitable punishment for murderers. They believe that if someone takes another person's life, he or she should lose their own life. This is fair for the victim's family, who feel great pain and want justice. Supporters also argue that the death penalty stops other people from committing murder, because they are afraid of being killed. Moreover, keeping a prisoner in prison for life costs the government a lot of money.
On the other hand, I believe that life in prison is a better punishment. Firstly, killing a person is wrong, even when the government does it. If society kills murderers, it is doing the same thing that it is punishing them for. Secondly, the justice system is not perfect, and sometimes innocent people are found guilty. For example, in the United States, many prisoners on death row were later found to be innocent. If they are executed, the mistake cannot be corrected. However, if they are in prison, they can be released. Thirdly, there is not much evidence that the death penalty reduces crime. Countries without the death penalty do not have higher murder rates than countries with it.
In my opinion, life in prison is a serious punishment that protects society, and it also gives prisoners a chance to regret their crimes.
In conclusion, I agree that life imprisonment is a better punishment than the death penalty, because executing people is wrong and mistakes cannot be corrected.
