Some people decide not to eat meat or fish, because they believe that a vegetarian diet is better for their health and also good for the world. In this essay, I will discuss this view and give my opinion.

Firstly, many people believe that a vegetarian diet is healthier. Vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains contain a lot of vitamins, minerals and fibre, and they have less fat than meat. Some studies show that vegetarians have a lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and some types of cancer. In addition, people who eat less red meat and processed meat, such as sausages and bacon, may live longer.

Secondly, a vegetarian diet can be good for the world. Raising animals for food needs a lot of land, water and food for the animals. Many forests are cut down to make space for farms, and cows produce a lot of methane, which is a greenhouse gas that causes global warming. Moreover, catching too many fish is reducing the number of fish in the oceans. If more people stop eating meat and fish, the environment will be better protected.

However, a vegetarian diet also has some problems. Meat and fish are good sources of protein, iron and vitamin B12, so vegetarians must plan their diet carefully to get enough nutrients. In addition, in some poor countries, people cannot choose their food freely.

In my opinion, it is not necessary for everyone to become vegetarian, but people should eat less meat and more vegetables. This is good for both their health and the environment.

In conclusion, I agree that not eating meat and fish can be good for people's health and the world, but I think eating less meat is a more realistic choice for most people.

An increasing number of people are choosing to follow a vegetarian diet, arguing that avoiding meat and fish benefits both their own health and the wider world. I largely agree with this view, although I believe that significantly reducing meat consumption is a more realistic goal for most people than giving it up entirely.

In terms of health, there is considerable evidence supporting a plant-based diet. Diets rich in vegetables, fruit, pulses and whole grains provide plenty of fibre, vitamins and antioxidants, while being lower in saturated fat. Research suggests that vegetarians tend to have lower rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and certain cancers. In particular, high consumption of red and processed meat has been linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer. However, a vegetarian diet needs to be well planned, as meat and fish are important sources of protein, iron, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B12.

The environmental arguments are also strong. Livestock farming is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, water use and pollution, and producing meat requires far more land and resources than producing plant-based food. Overfishing, meanwhile, has severely depleted fish stocks and damaged marine ecosystems. If more people reduced their consumption of animal products, the pressure on the planet's resources would be considerably reduced. Many vegetarians also cite ethical concerns about the treatment of animals in intensive farming.
