Nowadays, people can communicate with each other quickly by email, text messages and social media. Some people believe that, because of modern communication, it is no longer necessary to write letters. I mostly agree with this statement, but I think letters are still useful in some situations.
On the one hand, modern communication has many advantages compared with letters. Firstly, emails and messages are much faster. A letter can take several days or weeks to arrive, especially if it is sent to another country, but an email arrives in a few seconds. Secondly, modern communication is cheaper, because people do not need to buy stamps, paper or envelopes. Thirdly, it is more convenient, because people can send messages from their smartphones anywhere and at any time. They can also send photos and videos easily. For these reasons, most people today rarely write letters.
On the other hand, I think that letters are still important in some cases. Firstly, a handwritten letter is more personal and meaningful. For example, receiving a handwritten birthday card or love letter can make people feel special, because the writer spent time and effort on it. Secondly, some official documents, such as contracts or legal letters, still need to be sent by post. Thirdly, some old people do not know how to use computers or smartphones, so letters are the best way to communicate with them.
In my opinion, modern communication is better for daily use, but letters still have value for special occasions and some official purposes.
In conclusion, I partly agree that it is no longer necessary to write letters, because modern communication is faster and cheaper, but letters are still useful in some situations.
