In the past, buildings often showed the culture of the society where they were built. However, today, many modern buildings look the same, and cities around the world are becoming more similar. In this essay, I will explain the reasons for this and why I think it is mostly a bad thing.

There are several reasons for this trend. Firstly, globalisation has made countries more connected. Architects and construction companies now work in many countries, and they often use the same designs everywhere. For example, international hotel chains and shopping malls look almost the same in Hanoi, Bangkok and Dubai. Secondly, modern buildings are made from the same materials, such as concrete, steel and glass, because these materials are cheap, strong and easy to use. Thirdly, cities are growing quickly, so they need to build many buildings quickly and cheaply. Tall, simple buildings are the fastest and cheapest way to provide offices and homes for many people.

In my opinion, this trend has some advantages. Modern buildings are usually safer, more comfortable and more practical than old buildings. They have modern facilities such as lifts and air conditioning, and tall buildings can house many people on a small piece of land.

However, I believe that this trend is mostly a bad thing. When all cities look the same, they lose their unique character and identity. Traditional buildings show the history, culture and lifestyle of local people. If they are replaced by modern buildings, this culture will be lost. In addition, cities that look the same are less interesting for tourists, so they may lose tourism income.

In conclusion, cities are becoming more similar because of globalisation, modern materials and fast urban growth. Although modern buildings are practical, I believe this trend is negative, because cities lose their culture and identity.

Historically, architecture reflected the distinctive culture, climate and traditions of each society. Today, however, many modern buildings look remarkably similar, and cities across the world are becoming increasingly alike. This essay will examine the reasons for this trend and argue that, despite some practical benefits, it is largely a negative development.

The main reason for this convergence is globalisation. International architectural firms, developers and construction companies now operate across many countries, often applying the same designs and building techniques wherever they work. Global brands, such as hotel chains, fast-food restaurants and shopping malls, also prefer standardised designs that customers recognise. A second reason is the use of modern materials and technology. Steel, glass and reinforced concrete allow buildings to be constructed quickly and cheaply, almost regardless of local conditions, and modern air conditioning means that buildings no longer need to be adapted to the local climate. Thirdly, rapid urbanisation in developing countries has created pressure to build large numbers of offices and apartments as quickly and economically as possible, favouring simple, functional designs.

This trend does bring certain advantages. Modern buildings are generally safer, more comfortable and better equipped than many traditional structures, and high-rise construction allows growing urban populations to be housed efficiently on limited land. In addition, familiar international designs may make cities feel more accessible to business travellers.
