Some people believe that international sports events, such as the football World Cup and the Olympic Games, are essential for reducing tension between countries and allowing people to express their love for their country in a safe way. I partly agree with this opinion.
On the one hand, international sports events can help to bring countries together. During these events, athletes and fans from many different countries meet each other, share experiences and make friends. This helps people to understand and respect other cultures. For example, during the World Cup, fans from different countries often celebrate together in the streets. In addition, sport can sometimes help to improve relations between countries. For instance, in the 1970s, table tennis matches between the USA and China helped the two countries to improve their relationship. Moreover, these events allow people to show their patriotism in a peaceful way. Instead of fighting, people cheer for their national team, wave flags and sing their national anthem.
On the other hand, international sports events do not always reduce tension. Sometimes, they can even create problems. For example, some football fans become violent and fight with fans from other countries, and there have been serious riots after some matches. Strong feelings of patriotism can also lead to racism and hatred towards other countries. In addition, sports events cannot solve serious political problems between countries, such as wars or disputes over land.
In my opinion, international sports events can help to improve relations between countries and let people express their patriotism in a safe way, but they are not essential. Diplomacy, trade and cultural exchange are more important for reducing international tension.
In conclusion, I partly agree that international sports events help to ease tensions and release patriotic feelings safely, but they also have some negative effects and cannot solve serious problems.
