Some people think that the government should only provide defence and urban infrastructure, such as roads and water supplies, while other services like education, health care and social security should be provided by private companies or individuals. I strongly disagree with this opinion.

Firstly, education is very important for every child, and the government should make sure that all children can go to school. If education is provided only by private schools, many poor families will not be able to pay the fees. As a result, their children will not get a good education, and they will have fewer chances to find a good job in the future. This will make the gap between rich and poor people bigger.

Secondly, health care should also be provided by the government. Everyone can get sick, and some treatments are very expensive. If hospitals are all private, poor people may not be able to pay for treatment, and they may die from diseases that can be cured. For example, in some countries without public health care, many people get into debt because of medical bills.

Thirdly, social security helps people who are old, unemployed or disabled. Private groups and charities cannot help everyone, because they do not have enough money. Only the government can collect taxes and provide enough support for all people in need.

However, I agree that private companies can also play a role. For example, private schools and hospitals can give people more choices, and charities can help people in the community.

In conclusion, I disagree that the government should only provide defence and infrastructure. I believe that the government must also provide education, health care and social security, because these services are necessary for everyone.

Some people argue that governments should limit their role to defence and essential infrastructure, such as roads and water supplies, leaving services such as education, healthcare and social security to the private sector and the community. I strongly disagree with this view.

Supporters of this idea argue that private providers are often more efficient and innovative than the state, because competition encourages them to improve quality and reduce costs. They also believe that lower government spending would allow taxes to be reduced, giving individuals more freedom to choose how to spend their money.

However, leaving essential services entirely to the private sector would have serious consequences. Firstly, it would greatly increase inequality. Private schools and hospitals charge fees that many low-income families cannot afford, meaning that access to education and healthcare would depend on wealth rather than need. Children from poor families would have fewer opportunities to succeed, and people unable to pay for medical treatment might suffer or die from preventable conditions. Secondly, private companies are driven by profit, so they may choose not to provide services in poorer or rural areas where they cannot make money. Thirdly, social security cannot realistically be provided by charities and individuals alone. During economic crises, when unemployment rises sharply, only the state has the resources to support large numbers of people.
