Nowadays, violence in school playgrounds is becoming more common. Some people believe that parents should teach their children not to hit back when they are bullied. I mostly agree with this opinion, but I also think children need to learn how to protect themselves.
Firstly, I agree that children should not hit back at bullies because violence usually makes the situation worse. If a child hits back, the bully may become more angry and the fight can become more serious. Both children could be injured, and both of them may be punished by the school. Secondly, if parents tell their children that hitting back is acceptable, children may think that violence is a good way to solve problems. When they grow up, they may use violence in other situations too, for example at work or in their family.
However, I think that parents should not only tell children not to hit back. They should also teach them other ways to deal with bullies. For example, children can walk away, stay with their friends, or tell a teacher or their parents about the problem. Parents should also help their children to be confident, because bullies often choose children who look weak or shy. In addition, schools have an important role. Teachers should watch the playground carefully and punish bullies, so that victims feel safe.
In my opinion, in very dangerous situations, children should be allowed to defend themselves, but this should be the last choice.
In conclusion, I agree that parents should teach children not to hit back at bullies, but they should also teach them other ways to stay safe and get help.
