In many big cities around the world, there are large public buildings, such as government offices, museums, libraries, theatres and stadiums. These buildings have both advantages and disadvantages. In this essay, I will discuss them and explain whether it is important to build impressive public buildings when people need houses.

There are several advantages of large public buildings. Firstly, they provide important services for the public. For example, museums and libraries help people to learn about history and culture, while hospitals and stadiums serve thousands of people every day. Secondly, impressive buildings can become symbols of a city or country and make people feel proud. For example, the Sydney Opera House is a symbol of Australia. Thirdly, these buildings can attract many tourists, which brings money and jobs to the city.

However, there are also some disadvantages. Firstly, large public buildings are very expensive to build and maintain. The money could be used for other important things, such as housing, schools and hospitals. Secondly, some buildings are built only to show off, and they are not used very much after they are finished. For example, some stadiums built for the Olympic Games are now empty. Thirdly, building large buildings in city centres may require old houses to be destroyed, and local people may have to move.

In my opinion, when many people do not have a place to live, the government should first build affordable houses. Having a home is a basic need, and it is more important than having beautiful buildings. However, the government should not stop building public buildings completely, because some of them, such as hospitals and schools, are also necessary.

In conclusion, large public buildings have both advantages and disadvantages. I believe that providing houses for people is more important than building impressive public buildings.

Many of the world's major cities are home to large public buildings, ranging from historic parliaments and cathedrals to modern museums, concert halls and stadiums. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of such buildings and consider whether impressive public architecture should be a priority when housing is urgently needed.

Large public buildings offer several benefits. Firstly, they provide essential public services and cultural facilities: libraries, museums, theatres and sports venues enrich people's lives and give them access to education and entertainment. Secondly, iconic public buildings can become powerful symbols of national identity and civic pride. Landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House or the Petronas Towers are instantly associated with their countries. Thirdly, such buildings can bring considerable economic benefits by attracting tourists and investment. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, for example, helped to transform a declining industrial city into a major tourist destination.

However, there are also significant drawbacks. Grand public buildings are extremely expensive to construct and maintain, and the money spent on them could be used to address more pressing social needs. Some prestige projects end up being underused or even abandoned; many stadiums built for international sporting events now stand largely empty. In addition, large-scale construction in city centres can lead to the demolition of existing neighbourhoods and the displacement of residents.
