When people move to a new country, some of them choose to follow the customs of that country, while others prefer to keep their own customs. Both choices have advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, the best choice is to follow the new customs while still keeping some of your own traditions.
Following the customs of the new country has several advantages. Firstly, it helps people to fit into the new society. If they learn the language, eat local food and follow local manners, it will be easier for them to make friends and find a job. For example, many Vietnamese people who move to Australia learn English and join local activities, so they can communicate well with their neighbours and colleagues. Secondly, it shows respect for the people of the new country. However, if people only follow new customs, they may lose their own culture and identity. Their children may not be able to speak their native language or understand their family's traditions.
On the other hand, keeping your own customs also has advantages. It helps people to remember where they come from and feel proud of their culture. It also makes them feel less homesick, because they can celebrate traditional festivals and cook traditional food. For example, many Vietnamese families abroad still celebrate the Lunar New Year. However, if people only keep their own customs and do not try to adapt, they may feel isolated, and they may have problems communicating with local people. Local people may also think that they do not want to be part of the community.
In my opinion, people should try to follow the main customs of the new country, such as the language, laws and manners, but they should also keep their own traditions at home.
In conclusion, both choices have advantages and disadvantages, but I prefer a balance between adapting to the new culture and keeping one's own customs.
