Every country has its own customs and traditions. In my country, Vietnam, there are many interesting customs, but the one I would most like people from other countries to adopt is the custom of respecting and caring for elderly people. In this essay, I will explain my choice.
In Vietnam, it is common for several generations to live together in the same house. Grandparents, parents and children live together and take care of each other. Children are taught from a young age to respect older people. For example, when we eat, we always invite our grandparents to start eating first, and we use polite words when we speak to them. When parents become old, their children look after them instead of sending them to a nursing home.
I think this custom has many benefits. Firstly, elderly people do not feel lonely. In many Western countries, many old people live alone or in nursing homes, and they often feel lonely and sad. In Vietnam, old people are surrounded by their family, so they feel loved and happy. Secondly, grandparents can help to take care of their grandchildren when the parents are at work. They can also teach children about family history, traditional values and life experience. For example, my grandmother taught me how to cook traditional dishes and told me many stories about the past. Thirdly, this custom makes family relationships stronger, because family members help each other in difficult times.
Of course, living with many generations can sometimes cause disagreements, because old and young people have different ideas. However, I believe that the benefits are greater.
In conclusion, I would like people from other countries to adopt the Vietnamese custom of respecting and caring for elderly people, because it makes old people happier and makes families stronger.
