Some people think that everyone should be able to go to college or university, while others believe that only good students should receive higher education. In this essay, I will discuss both views and explain my opinion.

On the one hand, some people believe that university should only be for good students. Firstly, university courses are difficult, so students who did not do well at school may find it hard to pass and may waste their time and money. Secondly, universities have limited places, teachers and facilities, so it makes sense to give these places to the best students. Thirdly, if too many people go to university, there will be too many graduates and not enough jobs for them. For example, in some countries, many university graduates cannot find a job that matches their degree.

On the other hand, other people believe that higher education should be available to everyone. Firstly, education is a basic right, and everyone should have the chance to improve their knowledge and skills. Secondly, some students do not get good results at school because of their family situation, for example, they come from poor families or have to work part-time. If they have the chance to go to university, they may become very successful. Thirdly, some people develop later in life. Students who were not good at school may become very hardworking and successful at university when they study a subject they love.

In my opinion, I agree with the second view. Higher education should be open to everyone who wants to study, because everyone deserves a chance to improve their life. However, universities can provide extra support for weaker students.

In conclusion, although there are some reasons to limit university to good students, I believe that higher education should be available to all students.

There is considerable debate about who should have access to higher education. Some argue that university should be open to all students, while others believe it should be reserved for those with strong academic records. In my view, higher education should be available to everyone who is willing and able to benefit from it, rather than only to the highest achievers.

Those who believe that higher education should be restricted to good students make several reasonable points. University courses are academically demanding, and students who struggled at school may find them too difficult, leading to high drop-out rates and wasted resources. Since places, funding and teaching staff are limited, it seems logical to allocate them to those most likely to succeed. Furthermore, if too many people obtain degrees, the value of a qualification may decline, and many graduates may end up in jobs that do not require a degree.

However, I believe that the arguments for wider access are more convincing. School results do not always reflect a student's true potential. Many young people perform poorly at school because of difficult circumstances, such as poverty, family problems or inadequate teaching, rather than a lack of ability. If university is restricted to those with the best grades, it will mainly benefit students from privileged backgrounds and reinforce social inequality. In addition, people develop at different rates, and some students who were unmotivated at school flourish when they study a subject that genuinely interests them. A more educated population also benefits society as a whole, contributing to economic growth and innovation.
