Animals such as mice, rabbits and monkeys are often used to test new medicines and medical procedures before they are used on humans. Some people support this practice, while others think it is cruel and should be stopped. In my opinion, animal testing is acceptable in some cases, but it should be strictly controlled and reduced as much as possible.

On the one hand, there are reasons to support animal testing. Firstly, it helps to make sure that new medicines are safe before people use them. If a new drug has dangerous side effects, it is better to find this out by testing it on animals than on humans. Secondly, animal testing has helped scientists to develop many important medicines and vaccines, such as treatments for polio, diabetes and cancer, which have saved millions of lives. Without animal testing, medical progress would be much slower.

On the other hand, many people believe that animal testing is wrong. Firstly, animals can feel pain and fear, just like humans, and many animals suffer a lot during experiments. They are often kept in small cages and may be killed after the tests. Secondly, animals and humans are different, so the results of animal tests are not always correct for humans. Some medicines that were safe for animals later caused serious problems for people. Thirdly, today there are new methods, such as computer models and testing on human cells in laboratories, which can replace some animal tests.

In my opinion, animals should only be used for testing important medicines when there is no other way. Scientists should try to use fewer animals, reduce their pain and develop alternative methods.

In conclusion, although animal testing raises serious moral problems, I believe it is still necessary for some medical research, but it should be strictly controlled.

The use of animals to test new drugs and medical procedures is one of the most controversial issues in modern science. While I recognise the serious ethical concerns it raises, I believe that animal testing remains justified in limited circumstances, provided that it is strictly regulated and that alternatives are used wherever possible.

The main argument in favour of animal testing is that it protects human life. Before new medicines are given to people, they must be tested to determine whether they are safe and effective, and testing on animals allows scientists to identify dangerous side effects before human trials begin. Many of the most important medical advances of the past century, including vaccines for polio and treatments for diabetes, cancer and HIV, depended at least partly on animal research. Without such testing, the development of new treatments would be slower and riskier.

On the other hand, opponents raise strong objections. The most fundamental is ethical: animals are capable of feeling pain, fear and distress, and many experiments cause them considerable suffering. Critics argue that humans have no right to inflict such harm on other creatures for their own benefit. In addition, there are scientific concerns. Because animal biology differs from human biology, results from animal studies do not always predict how a drug will affect people; a large proportion of drugs that pass animal tests later fail in human trials. Furthermore, new technologies, such as computer modelling, cell cultures and "organ-on-a-chip" systems, are increasingly able to replace some animal tests.
