Some research shows that the characteristics we are born with have a bigger influence on our personality and development than our life experiences. This is a very old debate, often called "nature versus nurture". In my opinion, both are important, but I believe that experiences have a greater influence.
On the one hand, it is true that the characteristics we are born with are important. Our genes decide many things about us, such as our appearance, our health and some of our abilities. For example, some children are born with a talent for music, sport or mathematics. Some studies of twins have shown that twins who grew up in different families still have similar personalities and interests. This shows that some parts of our personality come from birth.
On the other hand, I believe that our experiences have a stronger influence. Firstly, our family is very important. Children learn values, manners and habits from their parents. For example, children who grow up in a loving family usually become confident and kind, while children who grow up in a difficult family may have emotional problems. Secondly, education and friends also shape our personality and abilities. A child with a natural talent will not be successful if he or she does not have good teachers and opportunities to practise. Thirdly, important life events, such as moving to a new country, losing a family member or working abroad, can change people's personality and way of thinking.
In my opinion, the characteristics we are born with give us a starting point, but our experiences decide who we become.
In conclusion, although natural characteristics have some influence on our personality and development, I believe that our life experiences are the major influence.
