Illiteracy has usually been seen as a problem in developing countries. However, it seems that illiteracy is now increasing in developed countries such as the USA and Australia. In this essay, I will discuss the causes of this problem and suggest some solutions.
There are several reasons why illiteracy is increasing in rich countries. Firstly, many children today spend a lot of time watching TV, playing video games and using social media, and they read fewer books than children in the past. As a result, their reading and writing skills are weaker. Secondly, some children come from poor families or families with problems, and their parents do not have time or money to support their education. Some parents cannot read well themselves, so they cannot help their children. Thirdly, there are many immigrants in countries like the USA and Australia, and some of them do not speak or read English well. Moreover, some schools do not have enough good teachers or resources, so some students leave school without good reading skills.
There are some solutions to this problem. Firstly, parents should encourage their children to read books from a young age and limit their screen time. Secondly, schools should provide extra help for students who have difficulties with reading and writing, for example small classes or reading programmes. Thirdly, the government should offer free literacy classes for adults and immigrants, so they can improve their skills and help their children. In addition, public libraries should organise reading activities to make reading more interesting.
In conclusion, illiteracy is increasing in developed countries because of technology, poverty and immigration. However, this problem can be solved if parents, schools and the government work together to encourage reading.
