When people are not happy with a product or service, some of them prefer to complain in writing, for example by email or letter, while others prefer to complain in person. Both ways have advantages, but I prefer to complain in writing. In this essay, I will explain my reasons.
Firstly, writing a complaint gives me time to think carefully about what I want to say. When I am angry, I may say things that are rude or not clear. However, when I write, I can organise my ideas, choose polite words and explain the problem clearly. For example, last year, I bought a laptop online, and it stopped working after two weeks. I wrote an email to the company and explained the problem step by step, so they understood quickly and replaced the laptop.
Secondly, a written complaint is a record. I can keep a copy of my email or letter, together with the company's reply. If the company does not solve the problem, I can use this record as evidence, for example, to complain to a consumer protection organisation. When we complain in person, there is no record, so the staff may forget or say that we never complained.
Thirdly, complaining in writing is more convenient. I can send an email at any time from home, so I do not need to travel to the shop or wait in a long queue.
However, complaining in person also has some advantages. It is often faster, and sometimes the staff can solve the problem immediately. For example, if the food in a restaurant is cold, it is better to tell the waiter directly.
In conclusion, although complaining in person can be faster in some situations, I prefer to complain in writing, because it is clearer, gives me a record and is more convenient.
