Some people believe that individuals can do things to help stop climate change. However, other people think that individual actions are useless and only governments and big companies can make a difference. In this essay, I will discuss both views and give my opinion.
On the one hand, some people think that only governments and large businesses can solve this problem. Big factories, power stations and transport companies produce most of the greenhouse gases in the world. Governments can make laws to reduce pollution, invest in clean energy and put taxes on companies that pollute. For example, if a government closes coal power stations and builds wind farms, it can reduce much more pollution than one person who turns off the lights at home.
On the other hand, I think individuals can also help. Firstly, if many people change their habits, such as using public transport, cycling, saving electricity and eating less meat, the total effect can be very big. Secondly, people can choose to buy products from companies that protect the environment. This can force other companies to change. Thirdly, people can vote for politicians who care about the environment and take part in campaigns. For example, many young people joined climate strikes, and this made governments pay more attention to climate change.
In my opinion, both individuals and governments are important. Governments and big companies can make the biggest changes, but individuals can also help, especially when many people act together.
In conclusion, although governments and large businesses have the most power to prevent climate change, I believe that individual actions are not useless, because they can make a difference and put pressure on governments and companies.
