The pie charts show the proportion of energy capacity from five different sources in 2015 and the predictions for 2040. The sources are fossil fuels, wind, nuclear, solar and other renewables.
Overall, fossil fuels was the biggest source of energy in both years, but its share is expected to decrease. In contrast, solar and wind energy are predicted to increase a lot. The total capacity will also go up from 6,688 GW to 11,678 GW.
In 2015, fossil fuels made up 64% of the total energy capacity, which was much higher than other sources. Other renewables was the second with 23%, and nuclear and wind had 6% and 5%. Solar power was the smallest source, only 2%.
In 2040, the percentage of fossil fuels is expected to fall to 44%, although it will still be the largest. Solar energy will rise a lot to 18%, and wind will increase to 12%. However, other renewables will drop slightly to 21%, and nuclear will also decrease a little to 5%.
