The line graph shows how much water was used in the world by three sectors, agriculture, industry and domestic use, from 1900 to 2000. The table shows information about water consumption in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Overall, water use in all three sectors increased during the century, and agriculture used the most water. Brazil used much more water per person than the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In 1900, agriculture used about 500 km3 of water. This number increased steadily and reached about 3,000 km3 in 2000, which was six times higher. Industrial use and domestic use were very low at the beginning, at about 100 km3 each. Industrial use started to rise quickly after 1960 and reached about 1,300 km3 in 2000. Domestic use also increased, but more slowly, to about 400 km3.
The table shows that Brazil had a population of 176 million and 26,500 km2 of irrigated land. Each person used 359 m3 of water. In contrast, the Democratic Republic of Congo had only 5.2 million people and 100 km2 of irrigated land, and each person used only 8 m3 of water.
