The bar chart shows the average number of hours of unpaid work per week done by married men and married women in three groups: without children, with one or two children, and with three or more children. Unpaid work includes childcare, housework and gardening.
Overall, married women did much more unpaid work than married men in all three groups. The hours of unpaid work for women increased when they had more children, but for men the hours decreased slightly.
Married women without children did about 30 hours of unpaid work per week, while married men without children did about 18 hours. For couples with one or two children, women's unpaid work increased a lot to about 52 hours per week. However, men did about 17.5 hours, which was almost the same as before. For couples with three or more children, women worked about 56 hours, but men only worked about 15 hours.
One reason for this could be that women usually look after the children at home, so they have more housework and childcare when they have more children. Men may work longer hours in paid jobs to earn more money for the family, so they have less time for unpaid work at home.
