The bar chart shows the percentage of workers in Canada in five main industries in 1850 and 2020. The industries are manufacturing, services, agriculture and fishing, construction, and energy and water.
Overall, the services industry had a huge increase and became the biggest industry in 2020. In contrast, most of the other industries decreased, especially manufacturing and agriculture.
In 1850, manufacturing was the largest industry with 36% of the workforce. Services was the second with 33%, and agriculture and fishing had 22%. Only a small number of people worked in construction and energy and water, with 5% and 3%.
In 2020, the situation changed a lot. The percentage of people working in services increased to 81%, which is more than double compared to 1850. However, manufacturing fell sharply to 9%, and agriculture and fishing dropped to only 1%. Energy and water also decreased to 1%. Construction was the only other industry that increased, but it was only a small rise from 5% to 8%.
