The bar chart shows the percentage of male and female teachers in six types of educational settings in the UK in 2010.
Overall, women were the majority of teachers in schools for young children, while men were the majority at university. In the middle levels, the numbers of men and women were quite similar.
In nursery and pre-school, almost all teachers were women, at about 96%, and only about 4% were men. Primary schools were similar, with around 92% female teachers and 8% male teachers.
In secondary schools, the difference was much smaller. Women were about 53% of teachers, while men were 47%. In colleges, there were the same number of male and female teachers, at 50% each. In private training institutes, men were slightly more than women, at about 53% and 47%.
However, at university the situation was the opposite of nursery schools. Men made up about 70% of university teachers, but only 30% were women. This shows that the percentage of male teachers increased as the level of education became higher.
