The two bar charts show the number of deaths from six diseases in Someland in 1990 and the amount of money spent on medical research for each disease. Both charts are in millions.
Overall, TB caused the most deaths, but it received the least research funding. In contrast, AIDS received the most funding, although it caused fewer deaths than many other diseases.
The first chart shows that TB killed about 1.8 million people in 1990, which was much more than the other diseases. Diarrhoea caused about 0.5 million deaths and malaria caused 0.4 million. Tropical diseases killed 0.3 million people, AIDS killed 0.2 million and leprosy only 0.1 million.
The second chart shows that AIDS received about 180 million for medical research, which was the highest amount. Leprosy and tropical diseases both received 80 million, and diarrhoea received 60 million. Malaria received 50 million. TB had the lowest funding at only about 20 million, even though it caused the most deaths. This shows that the money for research was not given according to the number of deaths.
