The bar chart shows the estimated illiteracy rates of men and women in six regions of the world in 2000.
Overall, women had higher illiteracy rates than men in all regions. South Asia, the Arab States and Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest rates, while developed countries had the lowest.
In developed countries, the illiteracy rates were very low, at only about 1% for men and 2% for women. Latin America and the Caribbean also had low rates, at about 10% for men and 12% for women. In East Asia and Oceania, the rate for men was about 8%, but for women it was much higher at 20%.
The other three regions had much higher illiteracy rates. In Sub-Saharan Africa, about 31% of men and 48% of women could not read or write. In the Arab States, the rate for men was 29%, but for women it was 53%. South Asia had the highest rates of all, with 34% for men and about 56% for women. This means that more than half of the women in South Asia and the Arab States were illiterate.
