The two charts show the number of men and women employed in six sectors in Freedonia in 1975 and 1995. The figures are in thousands.
Overall, the number of men employed in most sectors did not change much, but the number of women increased in many sectors. In 1975, men were the majority in all sectors, but in 1995 women were the majority in two sectors.
In 1975, there were more men than women in every sector. The public sector (non-defence) employed the most people, with about 850,000 men and 650,000 women. In manufacturing, there were about 640,000 men but only 300,000 women. In finance and banking, there were 420,000 men and only 130,000 women. The defence sector had the fewest women, at only about 35,000.
In 1995, the number of women increased a lot in some sectors. In communications, women rose from 250,000 to 550,000, which was more than men at 300,000. In wholesale and retail trade, women increased to about 780,000, which was also more than men at 700,000. Women in finance increased to 450,000, almost the same as men. However, manufacturing and the public sector stayed almost the same.
